Day 32 -- Birthday in Heyri Art Village
This morning, I responded to birthday messages, opened my birthday gifts and cards from my friends, ate some lemon cake my friends got me, and did homework before meeting with Mom and Dad so we could take a taxi to Paju’s Heyri Art Village, an area full of galleries and various outlets for creativity.
We walked around for a while before going into a gallery, where we saw an exhibition featuring lots of paintings with sparkly animals surrounded by dots, humans, and various commonplace objects like shoes.
Next, we went to a book museum, where we saw an exhibition about fairy tale book illustrations, and another about the illustrations of Andy Warhol back when he drew for fashion magazines and women’s magazines. In the exhibition, there were a lot of old copies of magazines like American Girl and Seventeen, and it was fun to see what they used to be like and read the articles in them.
We walked around looking for food next before finally settling at a restaurant where we ate kongguksu and bulgogi bibimbap.
Next, we went to the Museum of Modern History Korea, where we saw a multi-story recreation of a Korean town from the 60s. We saw lots of different types of stores and buildings, and all of them were full of objects from the time. It was really interesting to get a glimpse into how people used to live.
We went to Gardenus next, a super architecturally cool and aesthetically pleasing cafe where I had a delicious strawberry yogurt smoothie and a slice of strawberry pistachio cake.
We then walked over to the Paju branch of the National Folk Museum of Korea, where they have a lot of their secondary items in storage. The amazing part of the museum was not the objects themselves (although there was a lot of cool pottery), but rather how the objects were stored in big glass cases lit up and stacked on top of each other.
We took a taxi back to Seoul next and chilled in Mom and Dad's hotel room. We tried to go to a restaurant in Myeongdong, but it ended up being closed, so we instead went to the Ikseondong area so I could get my favorite tteokbokki at ChangHwaDang. We also got a shrimp wonton soup and a mixed dumpling platter, and everything tasted great. Afterwards, we got ice cream before going back on the subway.
