Day 42 -- Seoul Museum of Craft Art
After class, I had Greek Day and then went to the Seoul Museum of Craft Art for the afternoon. The first exhibition I saw focused on embroidery. The highlight was seeing a collection of huge embroidered screens. They were all very colorful and incredibly detailed.
Next, I went to the exhibition about bojagi, a type of cloth that Koreans traditionally used to wrap things They are less common now, but are still used in ceremonies like weddings. The exhibition featured a wide range of bojagi of different sizes and stiles. Some had clear patterns, while others were a patchworked mix of fabrics in order not to waste material.
In the same museum, I next went to an exhibition featuring Korean and Austrian contemporary jewelry. There were a lot of incredibly unique jewelry, much of which was designed for photoshoots and high fashion rather than practical use. The jewelry was made of a bunch of different materials and ranged from very abstract to hyper-realistic, like brooches that looked like giant, incredibly detailed bugs.
In the next sections of the museum, I saw a lot of types of Korean art like celadon pottery and wooden furniture, but my favorite part was the pieces featuring mother of pearl. Traditional Korean boxes with mother of pearl have always been super gorgeous to me because of how the light reflects on their surface and how the pearl stands out from the black bases, and these boxes and chests were no exception.
After finishing up at the museum, I went back to my dorm and did my homework before going to get sushi for dinner, taking a shower, watching some TV, and going to bed.
